As you may know, 2017 is the Year of Legends here in Wales, and there is a LOT to celebrate! This little country is packed to the brim with myth, history and legends. And not just historical legends - but legendary places, people and things. When you visit Wales, you have the opportunity to write your own legend..... and here are some of the legendary places you could visit when you stay with us at Dolbryn this summer, to make your summer holiday truly epic....
Dalaucothi Gold Mines, Llanwrda, Carmarthenshire - These unique gold mines are set amid wooded hillsides overlooking the beautiful Cothi Valley. The Romans left behind a glimpse of gold-mining methods but mining continued in the 19th and 20th centuries, ending in 1938. Guided tours take you back to experience the conditions of the Roman, Victorian and 1930s underground workings and you can have a go at gold panning.
Dinefwr Estate and Gardens, Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire - this stunning estate is a National Nature Reserve and also has an historic house, deer garden and beautiful landscape. Dinefwr is steeped in history because it was the seat of the powerful and influential Lord Rhys. Well worth a visit and there's plenty to see and do for the whole family.
National Botanic Garden of Wales, Llanarthne, Carmarthenshire - the gardens are a great day out, with plenty to entertain and amuse all ages - from the beautiful themed gardens to play areas, the beautiful butterfly house and lots of events and activities on throughout the holidays.
Carreg Cennen Castle, Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire - "location, location, location" is certainly true for this gloriously situated castle, high above the Cennen valley, with fabulous views across west Wales. Discover the legend of Edward I's iron ring of castles across Wales in Medieval time.
Rhossili Bay, Gower, Swansea - One of the most stunning coastal locations in Wales, Rhossili Bay has frequently been voted "Best Beach", so the whole bay is a bit of a legend in itself. What makes it even more special is the hidden secrets this area holds - the eerie ruins of a sea-stripped shipwreck in the sands that dates back to 1887.
The beaches of Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion - these gorgeous pieces of Welsh coastline are legendary in their own right, and there are a huge number to choose from. Caws Cenarth, Cenarth, Carmarthenshire - this legendary cheese producer has been award winning for many years and once you've tried a slice it's easy to see why. YUM!
Dylan Thomas' Boathouse, Laugharne, Carmarthenshire - the legend of all literally legends, poet and writer Dylan Thomas is one of the most well known names of modern Welsh literature. And his home, The Boathouse, in the interesting village of Laugharne is open to the public. The village itself is also worth a wander too - to explore the castle, town hall and well-known pub.
